Governor Gachagua impeachment notice tabled

Governor Gachagua impeachment notice tabled

A section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Nyeri County have vowed to impeach Governor Nderitu Gachagua over what they term as mismanagement of county resources.

The impeachment bid, which has already received the support of 35 out of the 47 MCAs in the county assembly, has seen the MCAs accuse the Governor of gross violation of the Constitution and abuse of office.

The motion proposed by Kiganjo Ward MCA, Baragu Mutahi, the county representatives further cite the Governor’s failure to assent to the county budget despite them passing it.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Majority Leader, Duncan Gituanja, claim that the Governor cannot account for more than Ksh 158 million in the last financial year.

Gituanja further alleges that the Governor’s failure to sign the budget follows the removal of his travelling allowance and Ksh 10 million to renovate his office hat had been included earlier.

Paul Ngiria, Chinga Ward MCA, however, rubbished the allegations terming them as malicious and unfounded.

“What the MCAs are doing is selfish and the Governor will not give in to their demand as they not serving the interest of the people of Nyeri,” said Ngiria

On his side, Governor Gachagua maintains that he will not be cowed adding reading malice into the impeachment.

Gachagua now says that he is ready to be impeached but insisted he will go to the Supreme Court or any other relevant organ to block the move.

Gachagua further alleged that the motion to impeach him as backed by his political rival based in Nairobi who, he says, has been bribing the MCA’s to create political stability in Nyeri.

The Governor has been facing impeachment threats from the MCAs since last year.

In June 2016, the county boss revealed a plan by the MCAs to impeach him after he rejected a Ksh 90 million budget for construction of their gym.

Despite the storm rocking his administration, Gachagua says he will not be cowed by the MCAs’ impeachment push and that he will soldier on in his bid to serve the people of Nyeri.

In 2014, six MPs from the county also planned to push for his removal after he voiced his support for the Pesa Mashinani Referendum drive.

The impeachment notice will be tabled Tuesday afternoon.
