Governor Kabogo cleared as varsity students death inquest closes

A court in Migori has exonerated five key suspects including Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo, over the murder of University of Nairobi student, Mercy Keino.

Trial Magistrate Peter Ndwiga said it was possible that Ms Keino was hit by a vehicle, though it was not clearly established.

The inquest which has attracted at least 47 witnesses, came to a close Friday, October 7, 2016 at Kehancha Law Courts.

The government Chief Pathologist, Dr Johansen Oduor, who conducted the autopsy on the body testified that it was difficult to determine what killed Ms Keino because of the multiple fractures she had sustained.

The autopsy could also not ascertain whether she was killed elsewhere and her body dumped on the highway or she was hit by a motor vehicle.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had ordered for a public inquiry over the varsity student’s death after the police failed to link any suspect to his death.

In 2012, an inquest was told that Governor Kabogo slapped Ms Keino before she stormed out of a party and subsequently met her death.

The inquest, which has attracted at least 47 witnesses, comes a close two years after the slain student’s body was found on Waiyaki Way, Nairobi.
