Governor Mandago feels the heat as newcomer sends shock waves

The entry of businessman Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich, popularly known as Buzeki, into the Uasin Gishu gubernatorial race is tilting scales in the county.

Bundotich, who is keen to square it out with the incumbent, Governor Jackson Mandago, for the Jubilee Party’s nomination’s ticket says that his ‘unparalleled’ track record as an entrepreneur has prepared him adequately to be the next Governor of the county.

He further states that his decision to vie was founded on the high poverty levels in the county and the development imbalances, further faulting the current governor for the alleged loss of Ksh 4.5 billion county funds according to Auditor General’s report.

But reports indicate that Governor Mandago may bolt from Jubilee and join another party that he will use to defend his seat.

The businessman on the other hand wields a lot of influence with reports indicating that he has been fronted by State House operatives to unseat Mr Mandago.

Mandago on his campaign trail insists that he has achieved a lot during his five-year tenure further urging the electorate to elect him so that he can finish the projects he has initiated.

The two are currently running an intensive campaign to win the hearts and minds of over 400,000 voters of Uasin Gishu County ahead of the August 8 polls.

Also plotting to unseat Mandago is the Nandi County Health Chief Officer, Dr Edward Serem.

Analysts, however, are of the view that the more than 100,000 votes from the non-Kalenjin is a possible factor that would tilt the outcome of the August polls.

The issue of negotiated democracy has also played out in the county’s politics with a section elders pushing for various political seats in the region to be shared equally among all the constituencies.

The elders who come under the umbrella Kalenjin Myoot Council of Elders argue that negotiated democracy was the only way to go to ensure equitable distribution of political seats in the county.

The Myoot elders claimed that they have agreed to share positions in a negotiated democracy to allow equal political positions.
