Governor Munya threatens to sack under-performing county employees

The fate of under-performing Meru County employees now hangs in the balance after Governor Peter Munya threatened to sack them for derailing development in the county.

Speaking at Mutio-Kiama in Igembe south sub-County, Munya  said that time has come to ensure effective service delivery to residents of Meru county.

The county boss added that he would ensure that residents cease complaining about various unfulfilled promises brought about by lazy county employees.

Munya warned that he would not hesitate to crack the whip and send some of the employees home.

Munya is not the first governor to say that he will fire county employees.

In September 2015, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero  threatened to sack and the replace striking Nairobi County health workers saying the county has resolved the outstanding salary and allowance issues.

Terming their strike illegal, Kidero intimated that most of the striking nurses belong to the Kenya National Union of Nurses and added that the county government only recognises the Kenya Government Workers Union.

“We have tried to engage the health workers but only a few have been reporting and I am now directing the county health services to recruit the officers to replace those who have deserted duty,” he said.

Gachagua said that besides having no genuine grievances, the health workers have an obligation to obey the court order demanding that they return to work.

Health care services had been grounded in Nyeri County following the three-week long strike in which they were lamenting over delay in salary payment, lack of drugs and medical equipment and demanded promotions.

The governor had warned that all striking workers would be replaced, arguing that they have adamantly declined to resume duties despite assurances of addressing their grievances.
