Governor Obado finally walks to freedom after 34 nights in jail

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has finally secured his freedom from the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

Obado walked to freedom on Thursday evening after spending a night in jail even after he was freed on a Ksh.5 million bail on Wednesday.

An issue had emerged with one of his sureties and having no time to handle the matter before the close of business on Wednesday, he was remanded for another night.

The governor spent the better part of the day sorting out the issue and was at last released on Thursday at around 6pm, according to his lawyer Cliff Ombeta.

Obado had deposited the Ksh.5 million cash bail and also presented two of his cars, a Toyota Prado and Toyota Land Cruiser V8 as sureties.

Other conditions for his release were that not go anywhere near the Sharon Otieno murder scene.

“He shall not go anywhere within 20Kms of Homabay County boundary on all sides of that county,” Justice Jessie Lessit warned.

She further directed that Obado should not skip any court session as his bail could be revoked at any time.

Obado has been in police custody since Friday, September 21 when he was arrested in connection with the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno and detained at Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi.

On September 24, the governor was then charged with murder together with two of his aides, and were all moved to the Industrial Area Remand Prison.
