Governor Obado: Migori losing Ksh.7M monthly to ghost workers

Migori County loses Ksh.7.5 million per month paying salaries to people who do not work for the county; this is according to a report on employee headcount released on Wednesday by Governor Okoth Obado.

According to the report, the county government has been paying salaries of Ksh.327,790 per month to three people who have since resigned and Ksh.114,205 per month to two employees who had been dismissed.

A total of 48 county employees who had deserted their duties are irregularly taking home salaries amounting to Ksh.869,960 per month while one person who is currently serving a jail term is still receiving Ksh.27,405 per month.

The report also revealed that eight people with forged documents are earning salaries of Ksh.318,500 per month while 96 people due for retirement are pocketing Ksh.3,494,015 per month. A total of 856 other employees are also earning undeserved allowances amounting to Ksh.2,031,753 monthly.

In his speech, Governor Obado said a total of 2615 employees out of the total 3345 were cleared during the exercised aimed at weeding out ghost workers from the county payroll system.

He said 267 employees who have been earning salaries did not turn up over reasons yet to be established and that 463 employees still have pending cases.

The governor said that a total of 859 employees are going to be investigated and action taken against them.

He added that the county government is still planning to engage other independent bodies to help them clean up the blotted county payroll system to cushion the county from waste.
