Governor Samboja wants Taita Taveta County Govt dissolved, calls for fresh elections

By Keith Wangwe

Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja on Tuesday embarked on a campaign to dissolve the county government and pave way for fresh elections.

The governor, flanked by the county officers, launched a signature collection drive aimed at reaching at least 18000 people in order to authenticate the move.

He hence called upon Taita Taveta County residents to avail themselves for the exercise to ensure the petition to dissolve the county government is a success.

“I think the best gift we can give to the people of Taita Taveta is to go back to elections so that we’re chosen afresh,” he said during the press address.

“For those who will be re-elected, we will thank God; and to those who will not come back, we will also thank God. Because the Bible says we must give gratitude to God in all issues.”

He further added: “It is now all systems go, let us go to the villages and ask the people for votes. I want to ask the people of Taita Taveta to conduct this process in a peaceful manner.”

The move by the county chief comes on the backdrop of a squabble with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) over a controversial budget for the financial year 2019/20 in which the MCAs reportedly allocated Ksh.41.6 million to each of their respective wards; thereby totaling Ksh.5.3 billion.

Governor Samboja however rubbished the budget saying the county would operate on a deficit.
