Governor Sonko accuses The Star journalists of blackmail

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has accused two journalists from The Star newspaper of attempting to blackmail him.

The governor, via his Facebook page, was responding to a story published on the newspaper on Thursday alleging a rocky relationship between himself and his deputy Polycarp Igathe, and further alluding to a take-over by State House officials of the day-to-day operations of Nairobi County.

Sonko says he had refused to “prequalify proxy companies” belonging to the two journalists whose names appeared on the story by-line, Julius Otieno and Imende Benjamin Imende, “to do supplies in Nairobi county corruptly.”

The article had, further, alleged that President Kenyatta had instructed Sonko to “focus on city politics and leave Igathe to run the county.”

This, they reported, demoted Sonko to nothing but a “ceremonial leader” and Igathe as the actual show-runner, thereby making the flamboyant county boss furious.

In response, Sonko posted screenshots of conversations between himself and Deputy Governor Igathe in assurance that they were very much on good terms, saying; “Looking at the attached texts and WhatsApp conversations does it look like we are falling apart?”

He further stated that the national government owes Nairobi County KSh.80 billion which, he adds, the government had already started releasing in portions.

“We shall continue to partner with them for better transformation and well being of Nairobians in terms of service delivery,” he added.
