Governor Sonko to be charged afresh in Ksh.10M graft case

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will be charged afresh next Monday after the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) amended the charge sheet to include an abuse of office charge.

The Governor is alleged to have received Ksh.10 million between January 10 and January 19, 2019 from Web Tribe through ROG security limited in order to facilitate payments by the county Government.

Sonko is facing economic crimes, unlawful acquisition of property and irregular payments charges.

On Monday, the anti-corruption court noted that the case which will take 28 days will be allocated 5 hours daily with no adjournments allowed.

The prosecution h also ruled out the possibility of a plea bargain, saying that they have not been approached by the defense.

Citizen Digital understands that 20 witnesses are lined up for the case.

The court has now directed the prosecution to give a chronology of how witnesses will be called to the stand, seven days to the hearing.

Sonko will be charged alongside Anthony Ombok- the Director of RoG limited- who is also accused of having received proceeds from RoG limited.

In 2019, the DPP had ordered the arrest of several businessmen and county officials accused of irregularly receiving funds from Nairobi County, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering and other economic crimes.

“These individuals being charged chose to break laws, actions for which they must be held accountable in order to preserve the public trust and confidence,” said DPP Haji.
