Governor Wa Iria calls on women to join Saccos

Murang’a Governor, Mwangi Wa Iria, has challenged women from the county to join Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (Saccos) in order to empower themselves socially and economically.

Speaking during a women forum in Kiriaini town, Wa Iria said that three years after the registration of the county’s women Sacco, Shilingi Kwa Shillingi Sacco, members have benefitted from his administration through contracts and tenders among other services, a step he terms as crucial in empowering the women.

The Sacco has also constructed a Ksh 70 million hostel that it plans to lease to Murang’a University.

He commended the efforts made by the Sacco noting that the project will be a life-changer for the members with an expected monthly return of Ksh 1.5 million.

The Governor said that the returns will be shared amongst members as dividends.

The Murang’a Governor called on more women to join the Sacco where they are encouraged to save as little as Ksh 10 per day.

The Shilingi Kwa Shilingi Sacco, has been floated as one of the flagship projects of Wa Iria’s county government despite some political faction terming it as a scheme to accumulate money by a few leaders.
