Governors accuse Senators of spreading lies on funds misuse

Governors have defended themselves against allegations by Senators that they have misappropriated Ksh 300 billion meant for development in the last three years.

Speaking at a hotel in Meru Town when meeting the Muslim community, Council of Governors Chair Peter Munya said that Senators should not operate on generalizations but should state which county has wasted money and also back their claims with facts.

He said should the allegations be found to be true, those responsible should be taken to dealt with according to the law.

“There is that general attitude at the national level that give a dog a bad name and then kill it, so give devolution a bad name. There easiest way to give devolution a bad name is to continue shouting that county governments are corrupt without facts, without specifying which one is corrupt or who is corrupt,” said the Meru Governor.

He added that this is a scheme by Senators, most of whom are eyeing the Gubernatorial seat by giving themselves good profiles in order to be seen as the best candidates for the position.

Touching on Chief Justice Willy Mutunga’s succession, Munya said that the Judiciary must be kept independent from the Legislative and Executive arms of governments even at the county level so that a suitable candidate is not influence by politicians.

He said that the best candidate should have a courageous legal mind of impeccable character, who cannot be manipulated and one who has a tract record for standing up for the rule of law and the process should be done in the most transparent process possible.

“The Judiciary must always be kept independent of the Legislative arm or the Executive arm. The Judiciary must be kept separate and independent from any whims so that citizens are assured that they will get justice,” said Munya.
