Governors condemn killing of city lawyer, two others

The Council of Governors has condemned the killing of city lawyer Willy Kimani, his client Josphat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri who were murdered in unclear circumstances and their bodies thrown in Oldonyo Sabuk River.

In a press statement to Citizen Digital on Sunday, the governors condemned the killings and asked the government to secure the nation and its citizens as required by the constitution.

“On behalf of the 47 county governments I would like to condemn in the strongest terms possible the heinous killing of Mr Willy Kimani, his client and a taxi driver,” read the statement signed by signed by COG chair Peter Munya.

Munya added that as governors they stand with the Law Society of Kenya in the call for speedy and thorough investigations into the incident as well as the arrest of the unknown killers.

“Our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the three victims of this death that could have been avoided,” wrote Munya.

Meanwhile, human rights activists in Mombasa and members of Parliament from the region are calling for the establishment of a taskforce to investigate what they call growing cases of extra judicial killings.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the group said the taskforce should be given prosecutorial powers to make its work more efficient.

The group claimed that 125 people in the coastal region who were allegedly arrested by police in the recent past and 81 suspects abducted from the North Eastern region had disappeared without a trace.
