Governors Dismiss Plans To Dilute Their Powers

Ruto’s remarks come a day after MPs debated several bills that seek to remove some of the priviledges they are currently enjoying

The MPs have been debating the National Flag, Emblems and Names Amendment Bill which among other things will strip governors the power to fly the national flag on their official vehicles

If enacted, the Governors will also not be referred to as His Excellency

Speaking at a devolution status meeting in Nairobi, Ruto maintained that devolution should not be perceived as an initiative to benefit the governors but as a move to take resources to the grassroots.

Speaking at the same function, the Chairman of the Commission on Revenue Allocation Micah Cheserem also warned against watering down some aspects of devolution saying it will negatively affect development.

Addressing the same gathering, the Controller of Budget Agnes Odhiambo said that the quarterly reports on the counties spending that exposed massive misuse of funds by governors are meant to entrench transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
