Governors raise concerns over IEBC’s readiness for August 8

With only 12 days to the August 8, 2017 General Election, the Council of Governors (CoG) is now calling upon the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure that it conducts a free, fair and credible polls that will reflect the will of the people.

Through a letter to the IEBC Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, CoG has expressed its concerns regarding the preparedness to conduct polls especially in arid and semi-arid areas, demanding the electoral agency to provide information of the logistics and how exactly it will hold the elections.

According to CoG, security of ballot papers is paramount to a peaceful election and therefore wants to know IEBC’ plans to ensure that there will be no ballot staffing to stand in the way of democracy in August 8.

“The security of ballot papers is very important. As such, IEBC should make it public the contents of the manifest for the gubernatorial ballot papers for each polling station in the 47 counties; quantity and serial numbers,” read the letter signed by CoG Chairperson Josphat Nanok.

CoG also wants the electoral commission to indicate exactly how much extra ballot papers has been printed in each of the 47 gubernatorial constituencies and all the information above for purposes of what it terms as ‘accountability and transparency’.
