Governors really loved the Kakamega 24-hour economy

They came, they saw and really loved the Kakamega night life. As the fifth Devolution Conference came to an end on Thursday, it seemed that the one constant thing that the county heads can’t stop talking about is the town’s 24-hour economy.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya set the ball rolling on Monday, as he was welcoming the delegates to his neck of the woods.

Oparanya declared a 24-hour economy for the entire period of the conference calling on the delegates to actively participate in the sessions during the day and enjoy the night life of Kakamega town even more.

It seems like they took that as a challenge and went overboard.

The next day, the governor returned with some good news; “Yesterday I declared a 24-hour economy and from what I hear is that it is working.”

When NASA leader Raila Odinga addressed the conference on Tuesday, the first words out of his mouth was a dig at the tired delegates.

“Some of you appear to be a little bit tired. Maybe because Governor Oparanya said that it is a 24-hour economy. Some of his guests decided to save his electricity bill by working without light,” he said as the delegates burst into laughter.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa followed up with another hot take.

“I want to say that what Oparanya said yesterday, we were discussing this morning, and indeed he told me that his 24-hour economy is working and Governor Waiguru can attest to it,” he said as he made an obvious jab at Anne Waiguru’s deputy governor Peter Ndambiri who had been caught on video naked with another woman.

“May I say to all the delegates, welcome to Ingo and feelanga free in all aspects.”

As Governor Waiguru was delivering her closing speech, she thanked the county head for the, you guessed it, the 24-hour economy.

“I appreciate the host governor Wycliffe Oparanya for being so hospitable and the 24-hour economy. And as Hon Raila Odinga said yesterday, a lot can happen at night,” she joked.
