Governors release emergency contacts ahead of El Nino

With the much anticipated El Nino rains inching closer, preparations to counter any eventualities have gone a notch higher with the Governors releasing emergency response numbers.

Through the Council of Governors, the County Disaster of Management Unit has been putting in place measures to mitigate the impact the El Nino might have on Kenyans.

The disaster management unit publicized contacts to be used by residents of the various counties in case of any emergencies.

According to Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero, response and emergency teams have been established in all the sub counties within the City to undertake various activities to ensure minimal damage to property and life.

Kidero said the Council of Governors found it necessary to involve and partner with residents and property owners in every county before, during and after the El Nino.

Last week, the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) Director Nathan Kigotho said approximately 2.5 million school-going children might be affected by the El Nino.

Kigotho warned children against sheltering under trees during the rainy season.

Areas that are expected to be affected mostly by the El Nino rains and subsequently by floods include; Narok, Nairobi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Tana River, Lake Bogoria Basin, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Kilifi, Budalangi and Nyando regions.
