Governors set to elect new boss
County bosses on Monday converged in Nairobi to elect new Council of Governors (CoG) leaders just a few days before official campaigns for political office kick off.
First, the governors will hold a Full Council Meeting before the CoG Chairman Peter Munya delivers A State of Devolution Address to outline the successes and challenges experienced in devolved government.
The CoG has in the past faulted the Jubilee administration of perceived meddling in devolution over slow release of funds and failure to fully devolve some functions to devolved units leading to a frosty-relationship between the counties and the national government.
With the General Election only three months away and several governors fighting for political survival after losing in the just-concluded party primaries, the new leadership will take over with anxiety.
The chair of CoG serves a one two-year term and the incumbent’s, Meru Governor Peter Munya, tenure ends today having been elected on May 22nd, 2015.
The first batch of Council of Governors leaders were the fiery Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto who served as chairman with Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya deputizing him while Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka was the Chief Whip.
The election will be held at Nairobi’s Hilton Hotel during CoG’s last annual meeting before the August General Election.
