Governors want Ksh 280B county funds released

Governors have expressed their displeasure with the government’s delay in disbursing county funds.

According to Council of Governors chair Peter Munya, the national government is still holding Ksh 280 billion meant to facilitate operations in the 47 counties.

With the transition period for devolution coming to an end in March next year, Munya said the issue requires urgent deliberation.

Speaking during the NCCK Annual Conference in Kilifi County on Wednesday, Munya accused the government of using flimsy excuses of mismanagement at the counties not to release the funds.

He claimed that the government’s intent in holding the funds was a tactical ploy to frustrate devolution saying there has been sound expenditure in the counties that has led to the construction of hospitals and schools.

Munya also accused the national assembly for fighting devolution in the county by introducing new bills which intends to take back powers from the county governments to the national government.

At the same time, NCCK Secretary General Peter Cannon Karanja said it was shocking that corruption had found itself into government despite the new Constitution.
