Gov’t accuses schools of mismanaging funds

The Cabinet Secretary of Education Dr. Fred Matiang’i now says that he will visit schools across the country to see how they have been utilizing finances allocated to them by the government as well as establish how they are implementing education policies at the school level.

He made these remarks during an inspection tour of three schools in Naivasha Township where he expressed concern that some heads of public education institutions cannot explain how they spend the free education funds the government disburses to their schools.

“The Ministry will now streamline the supervision and manage education institutions to ensure there was effective execution of the policies, standards and the prescribed curriculum at school levels,” he said.

He noted that Members of Parliament spend a large proportion of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) on education, but the schools are often unable to account for projects financed by these funds.

Matiang’i urged school managers to be good stewards of the resources they receive from the government warning that accounts will be audited so as management at the school levels is improved.

The CS was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Basic Education Dr. Belio Kipsang and his counterpart in the State Department of Technical and Vocational Education Dr. Dinah Mwinzi.
