Gov’t annuls plan to demolish Hazina Estate

Residents of Hazina Estate in Nairobi’s South B estate can now breathe a sigh of relief after the Building Inspectorate Department of the Ministry of Public Works revoked an earlier decision to demolish the houses which are owned by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Speaking at Hazina Estate shortly after re-inspecting the buildings, government engineer, Samuel Charagu, said that the initial inspection had established the need for minor renovation and further structural inspection that do not warrant the demolition of the buildings as earlier stated.

Charagu also noted that the estate developer, NSSF, has assured his team that it will undertake immediate repair of the buildings in poor state and report back to the inspectorate.

His words were echoed by the NSSF’s interim Property Manager, Architect Daniel Kiilu, who assured the residents of Hazina Estate that the buildings are in sound structural state.

“NSSF is a reputable public institution with a track record in real estate development and only undertakes real estate development on legally acquired land with title deeds and approvals from authorities, which is the case with NSSF Hazina Estate,” said Kiilu.

Earlier, there were reports that 19 houses developed by NSSF are among those earmarked for demolition.
