Govt bans consumption of fish from Lake Nakuru

The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute(KEMFRI) has banned consumption of fish from Lake Nakuru.

Speaking while presiding over fingerlings restocking exercise in Naivasha, Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary Lina Jebii Kilimo pointed out that research conducted on samples of the fish drawn from Lake Nakuru indicated the presence of chemical elements that may be poisonous if consumed.

Jebii’s sentiments coming on the backdrop of a booming fish business in Lake Nakuru following an upsurge in the freshwater fish species.

Hundreds of residents of Mwariki estate around the lake had ventured into the fish business to earn a living after they were rendered homeless following the rising lake water levels in 2020.

“Fish from Lake Nakuru is rotting after three hours, this could mean it is not safe for consumption. I want to ask the county government of Nakuru to check into the fishing that we understand is taking place in Lake Nakuru because the waters in lake Nakuru according to the report we have is not safe for human consumption,” said Jebii Kilimo.
