Govt buys equipment worth Ksh.100M to mark KCPE

The government has procured machines worth Ksh.100 million that will be used in the marking of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination that began on Tuesday (October 31).

Kenyan National Examination Council (KNEC) Chairman Prof. George Magoha said the government had acquired 20 Optical Mark Recognition (OPR) machines that will make the marking process more efficient.

Speaking in Nyamira and Egesieri Primary Schools during an impromptu tour to supervise the ongoing examination process, Prof. Magoha explained that the machines will help reduce marking challenges in exams that have been experienced before.

The optical mark recognition technology involves capturing human-marked data from documents.

The answer sheets will be scanned by a device that shines a beam of light on the paper and will detect the marked areas because they reflect less light than the blank parts.

At the same time, the KNEC boss denied claims that the exams didn’t kick off in five schools in Fafi constituency, Garissa County.

Some 1,003,556 candidates are expected to sit this year’s KCPE exam in 28,566 centres for three days.
