Govt condemns resurgence of violence in South Sudan

Hours after fresh fighting broke out in South Sudan, the Government has stated that there are no reports of Kenyan casualties in the renewed violence.

In a Saturday morning statement released by Government Spokesperson Eric Kiraithe, the government stated that it is working closely with the Kenyan embassy in Juba to ensure the safety of Kenyan citizens living and working in the country.

In the signed statement, the spokesperson said that the government has condemned the resurgence of violence South Sudan.

“It is a sad day for the young country whose citizens continue to sacrifice their lives and comfort in search of peace and prosperity. Their aspirations for a better future for South Sudan should not be dashed,” the statement.

The government went on to call for peace and dialogue, saying “…we join President Salva Kiir and the people of South Sudan in calling for restraint as efforts are being made to restore peace.”

Scores have reportedly been killed in the fighting, with international news outlets reporting that the violence broke out in the Presidential Palace in Juba while President Kiir and vice president Riek Machar, former rivals, were meeting for talks.

Reuters reports that both leaders did not know what had triggered the latest fighting between their factions and called for calm.

Following this sad news from the world’s youngest nation the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has stated that it is steadfast and committed to help in meditation efforts.
