Govt declares 6pm-6am curfew at Laikipia Nature Conservancy

The government has imposed a 6pm to 6am curfew at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy and its environs as a security operation begins to flush out illegal occupants.

The directive comes following a meeting of the National Security Council to review the security situation in parts of Laikipia County.

In a statement issued on Monday, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said: “during this meeting the NSC noted that the area has continued to witness insecurity as a result of rampant cattle rustling arising from competition for water and pastures, as well as a surge in illegal gun ownership which has escalated the violence.”

The CS announced that Laikipia Nature Conservancy and its environs have been immediately declared as a disturbed area and therefore a security operation zone.

“All leaders including politicians, businessmen, public officers and others who have illegally moved their livestock into the conflict zone to remove the same from there within the next 48 hours,” said the council.
