Govt denies ignoring Nyanza, Western regions in times of tragedy

The national government has refuted claims that it has not been giving Nyanza and Western Kenya regions the attention it accords other parts of the country when tragedies strike.

This was after Siaya Deputy Governor Wilson Ouma Onyango lamented the lacklustre manner in which the national government has responded to disasters that occur in Nyanza region, pointing at the boat tragedy last week where nine members of a local Ohangla band from Bondo sub-county drowned in Lake Victoria.

In a quick rejoinder, the newly appointed chairman of the Youth Enterprise Fund Mr Ronny Osumba said that the government is committed to ensuring that every Kenyan is accorded the necessary attention and support during disasters.

Mr Osumba further argued that the government’s involvement could be felt through its relevant arms and not necessarily through physical attendance by senior government officials.

The chairman, who stated that the death of the nine band members was a loss for the entire country and a setback to the economy and development of the youth, argued that participation by the police, Kenya Maritime Authority and the provincial administration during the process of searching for the bodies was a clear show of the government’s involvement.

Mr Osumba stated that the government is committed to helping the bereaved families and survivors to rebuild their lives, adding that Boyieta Ohangla boys’ band shall become a project for the Youth Enterprise Fund.

Mr Osumba made the remarks in Bondo sub-county when he accompanied the Principal Secretary for Sports and Culture Mr Joe Okudo, and Ambassador Dr Richard Ekai who represented the national government during the burial ceremony of some of the nine artistes.
