Govt destroys vessel carrying drugs

The Kenya Defense Forces Friday blew up a yacht that was intercepted attempting to smuggle in 7.6 Kg of heroin worth Ksh 29 million into the country at the coastline of Mombasa.

According to the police, the yacht is said to belong to a British citizen. Five people have so far been arraigned in court.

The exercise that was conducted by Kenya Navy and other security officials drawn from various units was officiated by Interior Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaisery, the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett and other top government officials.

Addressing journalists at the port of Mombasa Friday evening after the destruction of the drugs and the vessel named BABY IRIS, Nkaisery said that the war against drugs and illicit brew in the country will continue as planned.

On the contrary, he confirmed that a total of two million youth were currently suffering because of drugs across the country and urged security officials to remain steadfast and fight the vice.

He further said that since the government declared war on drugs last year, many suspects have been arrested and prosecuted as drugs worth over Ksh 196 million have been seized in the country.

The destruction of the Britain registered vessel, which was nabbed on April 9th in Kilifi, comes barely a year after President Uhuru Kenyatta spearheaded a similar exercise in Mombasa where a vessel carrying heroine worth Ksh 1.3 billion was destroyed.
