Govt distributes relief food to families affected by drought

A program to distribute relief food supplies worth Ksh160 million to over 90,000 families affected by drought in Tana River County has been launched.

Speaking as he flagged off a consignment of the relief food, Tana River Governor Hussein Dado said his government was spending Ksh3 million to supply water to four wards in the county.

Dado said a fleet of trucks full of food had already been dispatched to Wayu area, which is the worst affected.

The governor was however quick to dismiss critics who have accused his government of neglect and poor response to the ongoing drought.

In Kilifi County, the National Drought Management Authority with the assistance of the European Union has set up a 10 million euro drought contingency fund in response to the drought crisis that has so far affected over 1.3 million people.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi said the money has been directed towards sinking boreholes, building water pans and already Ksh5 million has been used to destock animals and for animal feeds.

“The national government has been running a national school feeding programme, in Kilifi we have about 531 primary schools and out of those 108 schools are captured under the school feeding programme,” said Kingi

Furthermore, Kingi said that in an effort to cushion school going children, relief food is being given to primary and secondary schools during the exam period.

At least 8,000 candidates are sitting for national exams in Kilifi County.
