Govt extends deadline for learners PIN as 3 million yet to register

At least three million learners had not been registered into the Education Ministry’s digital platform — National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) — by the deadline on Saturday last week.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, however, says the window will remain open for learners yet to secure their birth certificates which has been reported as the main challenge.

The exercise had been ongoing since January 24, 2018 with its initial deadline being extended to the 31st of March.

Even then, 2.9 million pupils in primary schools are yet to regularize their status in a process that should see learners allocated unique personal identification numbers (PINs). The numbers will be used in tracking their progress during their education and also enable the ministry allocate required resources especially for those in public schools.

By Saturday last week, 6.3 million pupils had been registered. At the secondary school level, the outcome was better; at 98 percent, being 3 million students registered.

At the early childhood education, it is only 1,787 learners that are compliant. Most learners according to the CS could not secure birth certificates on time.

Meanwhile, over 663,000 Form Four students have so far registered to sit this year’s KCSE while 1,060,000 more in Standard Eight have registered to sit the KCPE exam.

Standard Eight pupils are set to sit this year’s national exam from October 29 to November 1 while KCSE candidates are expected to write the exam from November 2 to November 28.
