Gov’t Moves to Tame Trade in Counterfeit Goods

Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed has warned that the government will take stern action to tame production and distribution of counterfeit goods in the market.

Mohammed said that the government would take swift, effective and stringent measures, including imposing hefty penalties, on those found engaging in the trade of counterfeit goods.

The CS noted that illicit trade is negatively affecting the economy by costing jobs, tax revenues and strangling the manufacturing sector.

Mohammed added that his ministry would work with relevant local and international agencies to tackle counterfeiting, which he says has been made worse by rampant graft.

The announcement comes in the wake a seizure of counterfeit goods worth over Sh35 million by Anti-Counterfeit Agency at a residential house in Nairobi.
