Govt, opposition laud IEBC for preparedness for voter registration

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials met political leaders on Monday morning during the launch of mass voter registration drive for Nairobi County.

IEBC laid out its plan to register more than 904,000 voters in Nairobi County and called on stakeholders to support the exercise in order for them to meet the targets.

to be the targets.

Kiraithe pledged adequate security to IEBC personnel in the field as well as voter registration, especially in volatile areas.

“No effort will be spared to ensure this exercise goes well. All security will be mobilized to support the process,” said Kiraithe.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga led a team of Nairobi politicians that included; Nairobi County Governor Dr Evans Kidero and his deputy Jonathan Mweke and ODM party nominated senator Elizabeth Ongoro, in the forum.

Raila hailed IEBC for organizing the forum to brief members of the public on its programme for the final phase of mass voter registration ahead of the August polls.

Raila, however, decried a mess in the department of registration of persons where he said national IDs are taken to the wrong locations instead of their owners’ stations of registration.

Raila suspected that the incidences are deliberate and intended to deter potential voters in opposition’s strongholds from registering as voters.

“Maybe by design or by accident a number of IDs have been taken to other parts of the country while they are needed elsewhere. So we have a lot of ID cards in Western which belong to people in Eastern and the ones for Western maybe some at the coast and so on and so forth,” said the opposition leader.

Odinga proposed that the list of people whose ID cards are ready be published on an open website to avoid the confusion.

Nairobi County Governor Dr Kidero encouraged Kenyans to turn out in big numbers to enroll as voters ahead of the August General Elections, stressing the importance of an all-inclusive democratic process.

“I believe that everyone should vote because everyone has an opinion,” said Kidero.

After the meeting, Odinga went straight to join his CORD co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula in the field to mobilize their supporters to register as voters as well as to take part in the process.

Raila visited polling stations in Kibra and Dagoretti North constituencies in Kawangware area while Kalonzo and Wetangula were in Lang’ata Constituency.

Both the Jubilee and CORDCoalition are keen to enlist the highest number of voters in their strongholds in preparation for a hot contest in the August polls.
