Govt orders forceful disarmament in Elgeyo-Marakwet County

The government has ordered for a forceful disarmament of all illegal gun holders in communities in the Kerio Valley.

While making the announcement, Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Wanyama Musiambo said that calls to have them register the firearms have been ignored and hence the decision to forcefully disarm them.

The administrator said that the government has deployed heavily armed security personnel in the area who are under firm instructions to disarm anyone carrying a gun.

Musiambu was making the announcement in Nakuru after a two-day security baraza in the troubled area following the killing of 15 people the last one week.

The regional boss added that the government has also deployed additional security in the area where lives have been lost and livestock stolen due to cattle rustling between the Marakwet and Pokot communities.

Musiambo dismissed reports that schools in the area have been deserted, saying that learning was going on smoothly. He noted that he had toured some of them and ensured that schools located near ambush points have police officers on guard.

While insisting that the ongoing exercise is an operation and not a patrol, the administrator highlighted that several people have been arrested in connection with cattle rustling and others marked as key suspects, adding that no one will be spared in the ongoing operation.

He said that two warring clans of Kapsiren and Kapsoi in Marakwet East have since been engaged in talks and have so far promised to co-exist.

He stated that the clans have been fighting over land whose history is well known to the elders and they have taken up the issue with Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos.
