Govt orders registrars at Referral Hospitals back to work

Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr Cleopa Mailu, has directed Registrars at Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital to report for deployment immediately or face disciplinary action.

Mailu has also insisted all doctors who refuse to return to work will be sacked and disciplinary action taken against them, starting with those stationed to KNH and MTRH.

The Health CS has appealed to doctors who are yet to report to their respective work stations to do so as directed by the government for the benefit of patients who rely on public health services.

Mailu has in the same vein appealed for dialogue to end the doctors’ strike, urging doctors to exercise restraint as they seek implementation of the revised 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and a Return-to-Work Formula.

A spot check by Citizen Digital showed that in six counties, a section of doctors started resuming duty as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Council of Governors.

Medics in Makueni, Machakos, Nyandarua, Baringo, Lamu and Eldoret counties trickled back in after a crippling 95-day strike.

This comes even as some counties have started issuing dismissal letter to defiant doctors based on the ultimatum issued by the National and County Governments.

According to Nairobi Health CEC ,Bernard Muiya , they have already issued more than 100 show-cause letters to the disobedient medics adding that they will be out of their jobs by Monday if they do not report to work.

Kirinyaga Governor, Joseph Ndathi, and Narok’s, Samuel Tunai, have also threatened to sack striking doctors.

Embu Governor, Martin Wambora, has also threatened to sack all striking doctors in the county and immediately replace them.

Wambora says the county is taking a roll call in all public hospitals and those not found at their work stations will be replaced with medics from India, Cuba, Tanzania and Uganda and elsewhere.

Speaking at Kiritiri market, he has added graduate medical students, 30,000 students from pursing post graduate studies and doctor interns registered with the medical board will also be absorbed.
