Govt shuts down Jacaranda, San Valencia hotels over cholera links

The Ministry of Health has ordered closure of two popular city hotels; San Valencia and Jacaranda, over alleged links to cholera outbreak at a Trade Expo at the KICC last week that saw two Cabinet Secretaries and 33 other people hospitalized.

Speaking to the media, Health Cabinet Secretary, CleopaMailu, further announced that all food outlets must have food handlers tested and certified and vowed to continue with crackdown on markets and restaurants that risk health during the cholera outbreak.

According to Mailu, only four fatalities have been reported since the outbreak and 67 people admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital and 12 other facilities, with treatment centers to be set up ib Mathare, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kawangware and Kibra.

While singling out Nairobi and Garissa Counties as active in cholera outbreak, Mailu added that the Ministry will set up cholera treatment centres across residential areas with highest cases of the disease.
