Govt starts demolition of condemned buildings in the city

The National Government and Nairobi County Government have made good their threat to demolish condemned buildings in Huruma estate in Nairobi.

Occupants of the condemned buildings have already been evacuated from the 5 houses earmarked for demolition Friday.

The five condemned houses in Huruma are just a few meters from the 6 storey ill-fated building that collapsed last week killing 42 people so far.

Public Works Principal Secretary Pail Mwangi said  the 5 condemned buildings are unsafe for occupation and are built on riparian land.

Mwangi said 15 other houses here in the city which have been declared unfit for occupation will be demolished from next week.

On Friday morning, the death toll in the Huruma building collapse tragedy rose to 42.

National Disaster Management Incident Commander Pius Masai said one body was retrieved from the rubble of the building.

One other body was Friday morning retrieved, while three more bodies were retrieved Thursday night.

Maasai further said one of the people rescued alive Thursday, died in an ambulance due to lack of oxygen, while being rushed to hospital.
