Govt to crackdown on illegal Imams

The government now says it will crackdown on non-Kenyan teachers in Islamic schools, popularly known as Madrasas and Duksis in the North Eastern region.

Regional Coordinator, Mohamud Saleh, on Thursday, November 17 revealed this during a meeting with Imams drawn from the larger Garissa County during a one-day peace building and conflict resolution forum.

He said that the government had realized that most of the teachers in the Islamic schools were heavily employing foreigners from the neighbouring Ethiopia and Somalia without following the laid down procedure and without the necessary documentation.

He added that the government had realized some teachers were directly or indirectly radicalizing the youth instead of impacting them with meaningful knowledge that would help them in the future.

Saleh said being employed as teacher at the Madrasas is a form of employment like any other and one needs a work permit and other documentations to operate in the country.

The Coordinator warned schools employing and habouring such teachers to register with the government failure to which action will be taken against them.

He urged the Imams and the Muslim clerics to work closely with the government and security apparatus to ensure law and order in the region that has faced the threat of terrorism from the Al Shabaab fighters from the neighbouring Somalia.

He also cautioned candidates seeking political positions next year to avoid making inflammatory statements that may throw the peace process in jeopardy.
