Govt to deploy police in schools to deal with radicalization

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery now says the government will deploy security experts to learning institutions to probe and deal with radical elements in learning institutions.

Nkaissery, who spoke after attending the tenth graduation ceremony of the Mount Kenya University, said the Interior Ministry is working with the Education Ministry to address security challenges in schools.

Following the spate of terror attacks in the country over recent years, learning institutions have had to contend with a new challenge: that of radicalization. The government has over the years been asked to crack down on elements behind radicalization, particularly in universities which admit thousands of students annually. Nkaissery says the government is determined to deal with the radicalization problem.

“We will send experts to institutions to establish the cause of the problem before it gets out of hand. We are working with the Ministry of Education to address the problem of radicalization in schools especially universities,” said Nkaissery.

The move comes at a time the country has witnessed numerous cases of schools unrest and burning of school facilities. ON Thursday night, a section of learners at Friends High School Kaimosi in Vihiga County set a dormitory of 200 students ablaze.

Students’ possessions reduced to ashes, with only the lucky few salvaging part of theirs. The school has since been closed down, with the administration blaming the incident on seven students whom they say were working with unnamed outsiders.

CORD Principal Raila Odinga, who spoke at Gentiana Primary School in Kawangware, Nairobi, called on communities to work with the learning institutions to stop the schools unrest.
