Gov’t to Develop Special Curriculum for Students with Disabilities

This according to Deputy President William Ruto who instructed the Ministry of Education and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development to come with the special curriculum and examinations in order to cater for the special needs facing students living with disability in Kenyan schools.

Speaking at Joy Town School in Thika on Wednesday, when he gave out wheel chairs in Thika to the students living with disability, Ruto said the rights of people living with disabilities must be observed and protected.

The Deputy President announced the government will spend Ksh 30 million to build additional classrooms and dormitories.

He also instructed the Ministry of Education to give the school 100 computers to aid computer studies.

He said the government will stating this year increase cash transfer to 55,000 households with people living with disabilities from the current 27,000.

Mr Ruto added that the government will spend an additional Ksh 70 million for bursaries and raised capitation of students with physical challenges to Ksh 37,000 to cater for their education.

The chairperson National Council for Persons with Disabilities Dr. David Sankok said people living with disability were largely disadvantaged by being mistreated and being looked down upon by many people in the country.

He said the 6 million Kenyans who were living with disabilities were facing a lot challenges which required them to be treated equally with other Kenyans since. 

The chairman said out of the 30 percent set aside for government jobs and tenders set aside for the youth, women and people living with disability, the later should be given 10 percent is people living with disabilities in order to have a level playing field.
