Govt to push for more local content on TV

Government will consult stakeholders in the media industry to ensure that a certain percentage of content in Kenyan media is local, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

The move, Ruto said, is geared towards giving Kenyan artist a platform to showcase and benefit from their talent.

“We want to give the Kenyan artists the first priority to profile their talent and expertise in the field of entertainment,” said Ruto.

The Deputy President was speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Thursday where he launched the Jaguar Youth Empowerment Foundation, an organisation that seeks to inspire and empower the youth and enable them attain sustainable living.

The foundation has a vision of providing sustainable solutions to eradicate poverty, environmental conservation and sensitise the youth against alcohol and drug abuse.

Ruto said the Government is implementing major projects in the country to make Kenya a competitive destination for business and attract investors who will create jobs for the youth.

“Everything that we are doing whether its building the standard gauge railway, expanding our grid and generating more electricity or expanding our road network is geared towards creating more investments, jobs and give the young people of our country hope,” he said.

Ruto praised the transformative role of the National Youth service (NYS) saying it has given the youth hope and kept them away from criminal activities.

The deputy president said he has worked closely with musician Jaguar (Charles Njagua) on projects in Nairobi slums saying he will support his Jaguar Youth Empowerment Foundation because it will transform the lives of youth.

“Congratulations to Jaguar for spearheading and creating the link between government and citizens in different neighbourhoods,” he said.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria said empowering the youth is not a favour but a right they are entitled to.

John Mututho Chairman of the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) called on the government to set aside funds for the rehabilitation drug addicts in the country.

Others who attended the event include Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu, popular musicians Jua Kali (Paul Julius Nunda), Size 8 (Linet Munyali), Nameless (David Mathenge), Elani, Daddy Owen (Owen Mwatia), comedians Erick Omondi, Churchill (Daniel Ndambuki) among others.
