Govt to reopen Garissa University College

The government is set to reopen the Garissa university college, eight months after 145 students were killed by terrorists in the institution.

According to Deputy President William Ruto, a meeting in two weeks will see a date to reopen the university college set.

It has been eight months of silence in Garissa University.

The loud gunfire, the screaming victims, families, 147 lives lost, and a nation in disbelief and then, deafening silence.

Eight months on, and the classes, and hostels of Garissa university have remained empty.

But a meeting slated for a fortnight from today, will now see a date to re-open the university agreed on, as a police post is completed.

Deputy President William Ruto, met with Garissa leaders Friday evening, where he sought to assure them the government had put in place measures to restore security in Northern Kenya.

Ruto challenged the leaders to work together to rid the area of criminal elements, saying it was collective responsibility that would weed them out.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack which ended the same day when all four of the attackers were killed.

Five men were later arrested in connection to the attack and a bounty was placed on the head of the attack’s alleged organizer.

The five were charged with carrying out terrorism-related activities and have been detained for one month pending investigations.

The attack was the deadliest in Kenya since the 1998 United States Embassy bombings, and is the second deadliest overall, with more casualties than the 2002 Mombasa attacks, the 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack, the 2014 Nairobi bus bombings, the 2014 Gikomba bombings, the 2014 Mpeketoni attacks and the 2014 Lamu attacks.
