Govt to spend Ksh 70B to connect all Kenyans to power

The government will spend Ksh 70 billion or more to connect all Kenyans to power by the year 2010.

Speaking during a burial ceremony in Mathira, Nyeri County on Wednesday, Energy Principal Secretary, Joseph Njoroge, said that the government has sourced for loans from the African Development Bank, World Bank, European Investment Bank and French Bank of Development for completion of the project dubbed The Last Mile Connectivity that will see all Kenyans near the national grid system connected to power.

He said The Last Mile project aims at improving electricity supply from the current 57 percent to 70 percent.

Njoroge also urged the young generation to construct micro industries to create self employment instead of rushing to urban areas searching for white collar jobs.

Brade Gate Industry chairman, Thuo Mathenge, echoed the PS’s sentiments noting that there are opportunities in Agribusiness but lamented that vandalism of electric cables and transformers is crippling supply of power in the country.
