Govt to support World Bank projects in Siaya

The government has assured the residents of Siaya that the projects initiated by the World Bank will continue.

The Principal Secretary for the state department of special programmes in the ministry of Devolution and Planning Ms Josephta Ayiela Mukobe said the Ministry will ensure sustainability of the projects.

She made the remarks when she visited Siaya  Governor Cornel Rasanga at his office.

“Projects initiated under the Western Kenya Community Driven and Development (WKCDD) programme will not die out after the end of the World Bank funding in April this year,” she said.

Governor Rasanga pleaded with the national government to inject money into the project since they were initiated before devolution took effect and their budgets are not incorporated in the County Integrated Development Plans.

“The national government needs to inject some money for sustainability of the projects even as they hand them over to the county governments,” said Rasanga.

Ms Mukobe assured that even with the exit of the World Bank, there are some programmes that will be handed over to the county governments as the national government continues managing the rest.

“The Ministry will come up with mechanisms to revive projects that were under the program and are not working to the benefit of the people,” she said.

World Bank, through the Kenyan government, has been implementing various livelihood improvement projects across the country for the past eight years.

It has spent over Ksh 852 million in undertaking various projects that aims at improving livelihoods at household levels in all the six sub-counties across Siaya County.
