Gov’t too broke to pay you – Governor to doctors

Busia Governor, Sospeter Ojaamong, has advised striking doctors to relax on their salary demands saying that the government is ‘broke’ to afford their demands.

The governor faulted government’s tactic, of buying time, saying it has paralyzed services in all public health facilities.

“I am aware the salaries the doctors are asking is  high. Talks with the medics can realize an amicable solution,” he said.

Ojaamong further termed the doctors’ 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as an illegal document as someone who is not in the current government sanctioned it.

Speaking at Busia Polytechnic Grounds while unveiling 439 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers, Ojaamong said that the governors are ready to engage the doctors in an effort to resolve the impasse.

The Governor wondered why doctors refused the government’s initial offer of  Ksh 70,000  salary increment.

“We are willing to discuss with doctors, the CBA they are talking about is an illegal document that was drafted by the former government, signed by the minister who is not in the current government and it was not registered.”

Ojaamong said that there are no other problems to be addressed in the health sector other than doctors’ salaries.
