Granny, three grandchildren run over by speeding car in Kirinyaga

Residents of Kirwara Village in Kirinyaga County are mourning the death of four people from the same family who were run over by a speeding vehicle along the Makutano-Ngurubani road.

The accident reportedly occurred when the vehicle hit 60-year-old Jackson Mbutu who was being pushed across the road by his three grandchildren on a wheelchair.

According to police, the grandchildren aged 7, 10 and 13 died on the spot, while Mbutu died while being taken to Kerugoya Level 4 Hospital.

The residents wanted to lynch the driver of the vehicle, but he managed to seek refuge at Wamumu Police Post.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Karira Mortuary as police launch an investigation into the incident.

The accident took place barely a month after three children from the same family died on the spot after being hit by a speeding vehicle in Sigeria, Migori County along the Migori-Kisii highway.

The trio was in company of another minor who sustained injuries and was rushed to the Migori Level 4 Hospital.

According to recent statistics released by the National Transport and Safety Authority, Nairobi County accounts for 22 percent of fatalities resulting from road accidents in the country.

According to the report, in the year 2015, a total of 668 deaths were recorded in Nairobi with 497 of these deaths being pedestrians.

Nairobi is closely followed by Nakuru and Kakamega, whereas Lamu and Tana River Counties recorded the lowest number of fatalities.
