Grief as slain Baringo chief laid to rest

The chief who was brutally stabbed to death by a brewer after he raided his home on an illicit brew crackdown has been laid to rest in Bebyemit Village- Baringo North Sub County

In an emotional sendoff at AIC Kabartonjo, Baringo leaders hailed Senior Chief Jeremiah Kendele as a man who risked his life for the greater good of the people to end the sale of illegal brews in the area.

Area Governor Benjamin Cheboi called on the police to immediately arrest the other culprits who were involved in the killing at Tiloi Village and are reported still at large saying they now pose a danger to locals.

Cheboi termed the killing as unfortunate and called for immediate action to protect other chiefs in the area.

MP William Cheptumo strongly condemned the killing and threatened to marshal all chiefs and their assistants to desist from carrying out illicit brew den raids without security.

Cheptumo further lamented that the slain chief and others who have died in the line of duty lacked insurance thus their families were not awarded any benefits upon their demise.

Eldama Ravine MP Moses Lesonnet and his Baringo Central counterpart echoed his sentiments and urged for better service terms for chiefs and their assistants.

This comes weeks after the house of an assistant chief in Kaimalel sub-location of Muchongoi, Baringo County was set ablaze by suspected brewers.

Wendot Kimutai, the assistant chief, is reportedly homeless and taking refuge at the Kenya Forest Station staff quarters.
