Kitui: Woman, child buried five years after they died

The bodies of a woman and her child that were discovered in a house in Kitui preserved for three years have finally been buried.

Remains of the deceased had been discovered two years ago and the suspect, Kitu Munyoki, arrested.

The woman’s family however declined to bury their kin insisting that a cleansing ritual be performed first.

Afadhali wao wamzike, mimi sitaki mtoto (Let them bury her, I don’t want to),” the deceased’s mother Pauline Ndung’e told Citizen Television back in 2016.

In the bizarre incident, the Kitui man had claimed that he kept the bodies because he “hoped they would resurrect within two years.”

Nilikuja kuona mtoto yangu na akaniambia alienda lakini atarudi akimaliza miaka sita (I came to see my daughter and he told me she has ‘gone’ but will be back after 6 years),” Pauline said.

She had insisted on visiting the home after several attempts to reach her daughter through the man’s phone failed.

When she arrived and asked Munyoki where her daughter was, he told her she had passed on but would be “coming back.

It is then that she realised what had befallen her kin and questioned the state of mind of the Kitui man.

Police arrested Munyoki even as he maintained that he did not understand what the fuss was all about.

Neigbours who spoke to Citizen TV said the Kitui man led a secretive life and it was difficult to visit the home.
