Group raises alarm over delayed payments to gov’t contractors

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has raised concern over the trend by county governments to delay paying their contractors, saying this is affecting their members’ businesses.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the KNCCI Siaya branch, Mr Michael Ochieng’, said that the delay in payment could lead to some of their members closing down shop.

Speaking on Tuesday during the branch executive committee meeting at their offices in Siaya Town, Mr Ochieng said that the organization would partner with other relevant government agencies to seek pending payments for their members.

“The KNCCI county chairpersons have been requested to list all the contractors whose payments have been delayed in their respective counties,” he said.

He noted that the organization has written letters to governors is all the 47 counties asking them to pay the contractors, adding that they would take any action necessary to avert further delays.
