GSU officer shot dead, another injured at Wilson Airport

A police officer was on Saturday night shot dead and another seriously injured by unknown gunmen near Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

The two officers; Constable Stephen Mukangi and Constable Samson Morongo, attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) were on duty at the Wilson Airport when two men masquerading as police officers approached them claiming to be in need of their assistance, only to later attack them.

According to police, the two attackers, who were dressed in full jungle uniform, asked the two GSU officers to help them attend to “a vehicle which had mechanical problem along the Southern bypass.”

As they were walking towards the alleged scene, two other men also dressed in full jungle uniform similar to those used by police emerged from a nearby bush, triggering a shootout that left constable Mukangi dead.

“A commotion ensued and they were over powered by the four men who fatally shot police constable Stephen Mukangi,” said police, adding that Constable Morongo was shot on the leg as he escaped the scene.

The suspects escaped with two AK 47 rifles loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each belonging to the two GSU officers.

The body of the deceased officer was moved to the Kenyatta University Hospital mortuary as a hunt for the suspects continue.
