Gunmen attack Red Cross vehicle in Garissa

One person is nursing gunshot wounds, while three others escaped unhurt, after unknown people attacked a Kenya Red Cross vehicle at Ruqa area in Ijara, Garissa County on Saturday.

According to Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Abbas Gullet, the teams were from Masalani heading to Ijara to conduct assessments for one of the four projects they are implementing, when the attackers emerged from a nearby bush and shot at the car.

“The injured volunteer was evacuated to Masalani Sub county hospital for stabilization and has already been evacuated to Malindi by one of our ambulances for further treatment,” read the statement.

Gullet says the rest of the team is receiving counselling and psychological support for trauma.

The Red Cross boss also said that police are investigating the incident adding that a meeting has been scheduled with the area leadership and community leaders to address the insecurity challenges.

This comes barely a week after three people among them two children were killed in a retaliatory attack between two communities at Maraha area on the Isiolo-Garissa Counties border even with the promise from the government to beef up security in the  North Eastern Area.
