Gunmen kill two university staff, injure police in Kwale

Two staffers of Technical University of Mombasa, Kwale Campus, have been shot dead by armed gunmen believed to be Al Shabaab militants at Mabokoni area in Msambweni, Kwale County.

The two female staffers were travelling back to the university aboard the institution’s vehicle together with two police officers when they were ambushed a short distance from the campus.

The two died while the officers and driver sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital.

Acting County Commissioner Mwangi Kahiro confirmed the incident saying the vehicle registration number KBL 566G, was taking the two Administration Police officers to the Kwale campus for guard duties when the gunmen struck and sprayed the car with bullets.

“The two Administration Police officers managed to repulse the attackers. One AP officer was badly injured and is currently in HDU in a local hospital. The other AP officer and the driver are out of danger,” said the Commissioner, adding that the motive of the attack is still unknown.

“I have directed the police to immediately start investigations and comb the area to ensure that the culprits are brought to book immediately, Mr Kahiro said.

The attack comes barely a day after Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers killed five Al Shabaab militants in an operation in Boni Forest, Lamu County.

The soldiers also recovered six AK-47 rifles, 321 rounds of ammunition, three grenades and various explosive devices after laying an ambush at Bodhei area in Lamu County.

“KDF assures the public that tracking of the terrorists will continue until the area is free from all security threats posed by this group,” said KDF’s Public Affairs Colonel D O Obonyo in a statement sent to newsrooms on Monday.
