Guns, bullets recovered as 3 terror suspects arrested at KDF, Recce camps in Nairobi

Three terror suspects are set to be arraigned in court on Monday after they were arrested allegedly conducting surveillance at a GSU camp and military base in Nairobi.

Two of the suspects, James Mburu Ikaba and Miriam Njoki, are reported to have been arrested on Saturday, January 4 while taking photographs outside the GSU Recce squad camp in Ruiru.

Mburu and Njoki have since been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts with the prosecution seeking 10 days to detain them pending conclusion of investigations.

According to the prosecution, the two, who were in a Land Cruiser vehicle, attempted to escape when they were flagged down forcing GSU officers to open fire, shooting one of the tyres of the car.

The court was told that two Ceska pistols and 52 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspects’ house and car.

According to the charge sheet, out of the 52 bullets, seven of them were found in the vehicle while the other 45 and the two pistols were recovered from the suspects house in Marurui estate, Kiambu County.

In their defense, however, the two suspects denied that they tried to escape, claiming they had stopped at the area to buy food and only drove off after being asked to leave the area.

“It is suspected that the respondents were conducting surveillance at the GSU Recce Company, Ruiru for purposes of carrying out a terrorist attack,” the prosecution told the court.

The two will remain in custody until Tuesday, January 7 when a ruling on the prosecution’s application to detain them for 10 days is set to be made.

The third suspect is Abdinasir Abdullahi, a man of Somali-Canadian origin, who was nabbed allegedly conducting surveillance at the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Air Force Base in Eastleigh. He is yet to be arraigned.

Abdullahi was charged with being in the country illegally; the court however ordered that he be taken to the hospital before taking plea as he is asthmatic and diabetic.
